Are those termites or ants?

Author: admin  |  Category: drywood termites

Every year when the warmer weather starts to be felt, termite swarmers (the termite alate reproductive stage) appear in their hundreds, thousands or even hundred of thousands. If you think you have seen termites don’t panic, you may have simply come across flying ants.

Here is how to differentiate between the two.

Antennae

Termite antennae are straight. Ant antennae have an elbow.

Body

Termite waist is straight. Ant waist tapers in the middle.

Wings

Both termites and ants have two pairs of wings. Termite wings are straight and the same shape. At rest, they fold together in a straight line. Ant wings front and back wiings are unequal in length and shape. They sit outward on the body.

Dead Pest’s

Have Bug’s We Fix

Pestworld

Stomp them out!

Eliminator.

BUGS!!

Insect out or bugs out

You call we terminate

EEEEEEEKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!

Bug Gone

Those are catchy, but probably most people will look to see a regular name such as John’s Pest control. Using logo’s such as I and the others have shown would be catchy, but as a name may alienate the older customer and think that you are a fly-by-night company.

Four Section 1 items noted on the termite inspection report (details as quoted),how serious the problems are?

Author: admin  |  Category: drywood termites

I quote from the Termite report:

Item 1: "Cellulose Debris (wood, paper products) with evidence of subterranean termites was noted in the substructure areas."

Item 2: Drywood termites were noted to Attic.

Item 3: Evidence of Drywood termite pellets noted to Attic.

Item 4: Fungus has damaged the underlayment/subflooring to the bathroom floor. Recommend to remove the floor covering and underlayment for further inspection
According to the termite report, the proposed costs are:
Item 1: $495
Item 2: $495
Item 3: $5
Item 4: $595

Shortstuff is correct. I would add that the costs shown are not anywhere near accurate.

I believe if you have dry wood termites, that will require tenting the house and I would suspect that is well more than $500 or $600 dollars.

The subflooring problem is still undefined so the cost may be only to open things up for a look and not to do any repair.

Substructure areas may require replacement.
Some roof may need to be removed for attic repairs
The fungus will need to be removed.
You need to get some estimates, but I would guess anywhere from 3K to 50K depending on the damage. Of course it could be more.

Will old upright/grand pianos still be infested with termites over time despite good maintenance and care?

Author: admin  |  Category: drywood termites

I have an upright piano of about 17 years. It is well-maintained and regularly tuned. I am now wondering if years down the road, my piano will be infested with termites despite the continuous good care as I read that termites feed on the wood from within the structure. I live in a tropical country in an apartment (not landed property) so if there is any termites problem, it will be the drywood termites.

Now, I wish to get a grand piano. But the thought of such a big piece of wood being gnawed by these termites perhaps years down the road is making me think twice about getting one. Will grand pianos still be infested over time despite preventive measures and good maintence?

Has anyone’s upright/grand piano fallen victim to these termites? If you have, what did you do to solve the problem? Is it worth buying an expensive grand piano knowing there is a possibility of termites infesting the wood?

abluheron1 is right. In order for termites to feed on wood, they have to be able to get back to the ground. Termites live on a 24 hour cycle. They will go "up" your walls and eat and go back down into the soil to get a "drink." I would not be concerned about termites eating your piano. Chances are, there is no wood touching the floor as most pianos are on rollers. There has to be some way for the termite to have access to the wood. Termites are very fragile creatures and even direct sunlight will kill them when they are not in their "swarming" phase.
